Contact: Noah Hughes, Professor of Earth Science Modesto Junior College (209) 575-6800 [email protected] PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release UC Merced professor to speak on “Climate and Wildfires in the West” at MJC (Modesto, CA) –The Modesto Area Partners in Science (MAPS) will offer a presentation by Anthony Westerling, Ph.D., associate professor of Environmental Engineering and Geography at UC Merced, on the topic of “Climate and Wildfires in the West” on Friday, November 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Sierra Hall 132 on West Campus. The event is open to the public and admission and campus parking are free. Westerling will discuss how forests in the western United States, which have been intensively managed by federal agencies for over a century, have been affected by changes in fire suppression resources, technologies, and strategies, as well as by land use changes and development pressures. Global warming has led to an increase in large, severe fires in recent decades, a trend that is expected to continue in the coming decades as climate change continues to accelerate due to the changes in the atmosphere. Westerling will talk about how the forests respond to a changing climate, with temperature and precipitation strongly influencing the types and characteristics of vegetation that fuels wildfires, their spatial arrangement, and how they respond to human actions. Prior to joining the faculty at UC Merced in 2006, Westerling spent six years in the Climate Research Division of Scripps Institution of Oceanography as a post-graduate researcher and an assistant project scientist. His research interests include applied climatology and seasonal forecasting for wildfire management, climate change impacts on wildfire and related aspects of mountain hydrology, and paleo reconstructions of climate-wildfire interactions. Westerling holds a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego. He has published extensively on wildfire and climate in the western United States. Contact: Noah Hughes, Professor of Earth Science Modesto Junior College (209) 575-6800 [email protected] PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release Hydrogeologist to speak on “Keeping Our Wells From Running Dry” at MJC (Modesto, CA) –The Modesto Area Partners in Science (MAPS) will offer a presentation by professional geologist and certified hydrogeologist Chris Petersen speaking on the topic of “Keeping Our Wells From Running Dry” on Friday, October 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Sierra Hall 132 on West Campus. The event is open to the public and admission and campus parking are free. This MAPS topic is especially poignant for the Central Valley in light of the recent drought years. As competition for groundwater increases, the water table drops and wells run dry, the questions arise: Is our current usage of the Central Valley aquifer sustainable and will the aquifer system still be there for the agricultural community of tomorrow? Agriculture, the economic backbone of the Central Valley of California, is heavily dependent on the pumping of massive amounts of groundwater from the Central Valley aquifer system, especially during dry years. Petersen will discuss how groundwater recharge in wet periods using recharge basins and wells could help to ensure the sustainable management of groundwater resources. In his talk, he will show how this problem has been handled in other parts of the state and provide some thoughts on what people in the Modesto area can do to advance groundwater storage. Petersen has an MS in Hydrology from the University of Arizona and has 26 years of experience in the planning and implementation of groundwater projects throughout California, many of which involve artificial recharge and conjunctive use facilities. He is a principal hydrogeologist and project manager for West Yost Associates in Davis, California. The play Frankenstein is a classic tale of horror and suspense that details the ill-fated experiments of Victor Frankenstein as he attempts to fathom the secrets of life and death. Purchasing cadavers from two unsavory grave robbers, he gives life to a creature both hideous and touching. Adhering more closely to the original Mary Shelley novel than did the famous motion picture versions, the play blends moments of humor, philosophy and terror and questions morality and the dangers of unrestrained scientific inquiry. Sean Trew will play Victor Frankenstein in the MJC production, with Jon Cates as Henry Clerval, Marc Pratt in the role of The Creature and Rachel Pearre as Elizabeth. The MJC production is directed by Professor Lynette Borrelli-Glidewell. Tickets for the Student Preview Night are $5 for students, and all other performances are $8 for students and seniors and $10 general admission. Tickets may be purchased at the Auditorium Box Office, Tuesday through Friday, 12 noon to 5 p.m., or by calling the Box Office at 575-6776 during these hours. Tickets may also be purchased online at http://mjc.tix.com -MJC- |
